“We want to lead with quality…You can have all of the wonderful attributes in the world, but if it doesn’t taste good, nobody’s going to buy it.”
Serafina’s wife, Jennifer Johnson, knows how to make food taste awesome. Jen was a personal chef for the Getty family and worked at Chez Panisse. However, the business side of running a food business was an unknown to both Serafina and Jen.
Serafina took on the task of bringing to life their dream of producing and selling high-quality, organic, artisan poultry products. She had no background in the food industry; instead, she drew on her work in nonprofit fundraising to do a lot on a shoestring. One of the first things she did was reach out to others who could guide her.
With the help of a mentor, Serafina learned the ropes. She realized that economies of scale would work in their favor and that putting a heavy emphasis on increasing overall demand for organic poultry was crucial. Serafina and Hip Chick Farms have been all over natural food podcasts, as well as getting on to QVC, where they had sellout after sellout, up to $25k a minute. Hip Chick Farms also sells in Whole Foods, Kroger, and Walmart.
It’s a wild ride, but worth it. Serafina and Jen hope to pass their legacy on to their daughter, who inspired their quest for the perfect chicken nugget. “We tell her she’s going to be an heir to a chicken nugget fortune,” Serafina said with a BIG smile.
