Founder Feature: Lauren Simonelli

“Each year, at least 8 million tonnes of plastics leak into the ocean – which is equivalent to dumping the contents of one garbage truck into the ocean every minute.”  The New Plastics Economy: Rethinking the future of plastics, World Economic Forum report, January 2016

There are a lot of compelling reasons to start a business. The fact that it’s predicted, in the report cited above, that the ocean will contain more plastic than fish by weight in the year 2050 is a pretty riveting reason to do something.

For Lauren Simonelli, the threat of plastic inundation was just one of her motivations for cofounding ThreeMain, an eco-conscious cleaning supplies company. Eschewing toxic chemicals to clean her house was also high on the list.

“Our ingredient profile and sustainable packaging are what make ThreeMain unique. We use simple, non-toxic ingredients that clean effectively. Our products are packaged in reusable/refillable aluminum bottles, and our refills contain 80% less plastic than traditional household cleaning bottles, and can be recycled through our zero-waste program. We also donate 3% of all sales to our non-profit partner The Rozalia Project, an organization committed to protecting and cleaning the oceans.

“The realization that there are millions of consumers out there who are just like me, wanting to live a healthy lifestyle and make an impact on the planet without having to sacrifice efficacy or convenience is what drove me to join my partner and ThreeMain CEO, Joe, in starting this venture. I knew that if we could develop a more effective alternative that was healthier for their families and enabled them to easily make an impact on our planet, consumers would be interested,” Lauren said.

Although Lauren came to ThreeMain with startup experience (she had launched a tech startup, Gozaik, which was subsequently acquired by Monster Worldwide), a product-based company was a decidedly new venture.

“What came as a total shock was the supply chain management side of running a consumer product brand. Working in tech for my entire career prior, this was something I was never exposed to, so there was a lot to learn!” laughed Lauren.

To be sure, there have been rewards for Lauren’s undertaking the challenge of learning a new industry.

“My favorite thing about ThreeMain is that we're making an impact. We're helping consumers maintain a healthier home, while making an impact on our planet. There is no greater feeling than knowing that the work you are doing day in and day out is truly making a difference,” she shared.

Lauren said, “I joined The F Project because I am inspired by other female founders and the work that they do. I am excited to share successes, learn from failures, and do what I can to support other amazing entrepreneurs. My motto is, ‘Believe in yourself and surround yourself with people who build you up and support you!’”

We couldn’t have said it better!
