Founder Feature: Karen Bonner, Shannon Oliver, and Jessica Hilbert

A++++++ Pretty sure that’s the grade these three grad students got on the assignment that led to the creation of their company, Red Duck.

Karen Bonner, Shannon Oliver, and Jessica Hilbert were in graduate school at the University of Oregon when a class assignment brought them together. They really leaned in to the task before them. Fast forward to great grades, a great company, a great partnership, and great condiments.

The three founders wanted to spice up the condiment aisle…and clean it up at the same time. Their sauces (four ketchups, three bbq sauces, cocktail sauce, and three taco sauces) have substantially less sodium and sugar than most commercial condiments. As Red Duck’s website says, you won’t find any “-ings” in their products – no flavorings and no colorings.

It was important to Karen, Jessica, and Shannon that Red Duck be about more than just great food. They decided to make Red Duck a Certified B Corporation. Certified B Corporations meet rigorous standards of performance, accountability, and transparency to bring about positive change through business practices that put community and world health on the same plane as profits.

The Fighting Duck is the University of Oregon’s mascot, and these founders are certainly proving themselves and their company to be the feistiest ducks on the pond.
