“We love employee turnover” is not a typical company motto, but Brett Lauren Jewelry is not a typical company. Brett Krugman’s beautiful bracelets are put together by female residents of local homeless shelters. Brett teaches her employees everything she knows about production and sales, in hopes that they will find more skilled positions elsewhere. Let’s hear from this mensch!
The F Project: What was the lightbulb moment that made you start your company?
Brett Krugman: My career had come to a halt, the industry was changing rapidly and I was cranky. I would rather play with beads than do anything else. And people wanted to buy them - go figure!
TFP: What makes you want to jump out of bed every day?
BK: Pretty things, new color combinations, an idea that came to me in the middle of the night...our amazing production team and watching them grow and get their confidence back!
TFP: What about your past career or life experience prepared you for entrepreneurship? What was a total shock?
BK: I'm the daughter of an entrepreneur fashion designer so it's the only thing I've ever known. The "aha" moment was when I realized I didn't "know it all,” and no matter how many years of experience growing up, or in my own career, you don't always see the forest for the trees...ask for help immediately!
TFP: What makes your product special/different?
BK: Our unique bead-spinning-in-bezel signature design and the fact the we "give forward" by hiring homeless women from our local community and teach them job and life skills, not just how to string a bracelet. It takes a village.
TFP: What advice do you have for other female founders?
BK: Don't be afraid to ask for help - and do it sooner rather than later! There's no place for pride and "I can do it all myself.” People will offer to help you - accept it.
TFP: Why did you join The F Project?
BK: How can you not want to be a part of this incredible and inspiring group of women??? I have so much to learn and The F Project is the ultimate collaborative classroom!
