There are many beautiful things to catch your eye when you’re browsing Alicia Kossick’s shop, Polished Coconut, in Coconut Grove. But what makes an item a “must-have,” in Alicia’s eyes, is the woman or women who created it.
Alicia founded Polished Coconut as a socially responsible lifestyle brand to offer unique handcrafted pieces to buyers at prices that reflect the craftsmanship that goes into making them. She sells everything from furniture to earrings in her brick-and-mortar location and in pop-ups around the greater Miami area.
Alicia works with more than 200 women artisans to source the goods she sells at Polished Coconut. Her bestsellers include the mochila wayuua, a handwoven bag from Colombia that takes 30 days for a woman and her daughter to make.
A walking advertisement in her stylish ensembles combining modern and traditional elements, Alicia is always glad to spread the message of female enfranchisement.
“Each purchase of a handmade product contributes to income generation for these artisan communities. Families are fed first. Mothers, the breadwinners, can cover expenses, and then finally have access to better quality cotton and weave without pressure about needing to make a bag to support their families.
I pledge to empower women artisans with premium pricing, optimal trading conditions, and dignity towards their craft,” Alica said.
We’re so glad Alicia and Polished Coconut are making the world a better (and more beautiful) place.
